CKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I am deeply indebted to my supervisor Marika Taylor for all the encouragement, wise guidance and ample support she has shown me in the last four years. Not only was I fortunate to receive an intense supervision from her but I also believe that with our close collaboration and by pushing me hard to think problems carefully through Marika has taught me a great deal of how to become a thorough scientist and how to distinguish the valuable from the shiny. Another large debt of gratitude goes to Kostas Skenderis for all the physics he has taught me in the course of the four projects we did together and for playing a role nothing short of a second supervisor. I feel the number of times that I was bumping into his office to seek his patient advice on topics which confused me eludes itself countability. Many thanks to Jan de Boer for being my official promotor, writing numerous reference letters and for many inspiring and lively lunch conversations.
There is no doubt I will miss all you people in the ITF. Ardian, Bahar, Balt, Ilies, Jelena, Jo-hannes, Joost, Kyriakos, Leo, Lotte, Manuela, Masaki, Meindert, Milena, Paul, Sasha, Sheer, Thomas, Xerxes and others, you all contributed to seeding the flower which eventually blos-somed into this PhD thesis with numerous physics and non-physics discussions, by ensuring a great working atmosphere and particularly by being such good colleagues and friends. Many thanks also for the patient assistance in administrative matters to Bianca, Jonneke, Lotty, Paula and Yocklang.
Johannes and Nancy, you deserve a big thank you for being my paranimfs. Anne-Pier, thank you for proof-reading the Dutch summary of this thesis.
Last but not least I would like to thank my family for their continuing love and support.
