Laser interf'erometry is а very powerf'ul method to measure ,electron densities in plasmas. Experiments. in di.ff"erent
laboratories showed that the electron de~sity could Ье
determined with an uncertainty of' less than 5 %.
Measurements in Kiel with а. two wavelength Michelson laser interf'erometer were carried out to f'ind the experimental parameters limiting the accuracy o.f this method. The error analysis included statistical errors as well as errors ·due to plasma inhomogeneities, contributions of highly excited
statгs to the index of' ref'r'activity and errors in tЬ:е deter-m\nation o.f the correct number of' f'ringes.
То search f'or possiЫe systematic errors the experiments were repeated in other laboratories using identical (Toulouse). or comparaЫe (Eindhoven) arc sources but dif'f'erent inter-ferometric set-ups, dif'f'erent· laser wavelengths and different measuring equipment. The comparison revealed no sysi:ematic. errors due to these parameters.
