Thiss PhD thesis deals with sustainability performance evaluation of companies.. The focus is on the environmental and to a lesser extent, sociall strategic objectives of companies and on the relation off such objectivess with company's performance evaluation. Strategic objectivess are the ones that are crucial to what the company expectss to achieve in the environmental, social and financial domains. .
Differentt types of performance evaluation are described. It is concludedd that the focus of such an evaluation should be on choosingg what is important to be achieved, how to measure and implementt that and on evaluating what the results are of the effortss that have been made. The chosen format is the sustainability balancedd scorecard, focusing on the sustainability strategic areas too be evaluated. A study of Portuguese companies shows varying environmentall and social performances. The study of Portuguese companiess also shows that the sustainability balanced scorecard format,, with its modified perspectives and categories adapted to thee performance category and current strategic context of the companies,, is adequate to deal with the multiplicity of strategic sustainabilityy issues. It does offer an inspiring format for further integrationn of environmental and social matters into the business strategyy of com pa n ies.
