Eleanor Atieno Ochodo was born on 9th November 1981 in Nairobi, Kenya. She
went to Lavington Primary School and thereafter proceeded to the Kenya High School for her secondary education. In school she excelled in academia and track events in sports in particular sprinting. While in the Kenya High School, Eleanor participated in a 2-‐month exchange program with Brooks School in Massachusetts, U.S.A where she studied the American style of education. After excelling in the final secondary school examination Eleanor was admitted into the school of Medicine at the University of Nairobi.
While waiting to join the University, Eleanor had her first research experience by working at the International Development Research Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. She was employed to spearhead a review on “Internet connectivity in Africa”.
While in Medical school, Eleanor further participated in research by being a member of the Medical Students Research Foundation. In addition while working under her Mentor, Dr. Elizabeth Bukusi, she participated in the data collection of research projects such as the WHO, Translating research into Practice (TRIP).
After completing her Medical studies, Eleanor worked as a Medical intern at the Kijabe Mission hospital, in central Kenya and after fully qualifying as a medical doctor; the Kenya Medical Research Foundation (KEMRI) employed her. In KEMRI, she helped spearhead the cervical cancer screening program in western Kenya.
After working for KEMRI, she proceeded to the Netherlands to pursue a Masters degree in International Health, a joint degree offered by the Royal Tropical Institute and the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.
While pursuing her Master’s degree she was involved in research projects such as the WHO Human Resources for Health Tracking Survey at the Royal Tropical Institute and a systematic review to assess Malaria diagnostic tests in pregnancy at the Biomedical Research department of the Royal Tropical Institute (KITBR).
Upon completing her Masters degree, Eleanor immediately began her PhD studies in Clinical Epidemiology at the Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam. She now lives in Cape Town, South Africa with her husband and works as a senior researcher and lecturer in the faculty of Medicine and Health sciences, Stellenbosch University. Her current work involves research and teaching in diagnostic tests, guidelines and evidence based medicine.
