Acknowledgments
I would like to thank all people who, in one way or another, has supported me in my research and during my staying in Amsterdam.
Above all, I am deeply indebted to my supervisor Dr. ir. H. J. M. A. Heijmans, not only because his guidance made this thesis a reality, but also because he devoted his time to me whenever I needed it. His qualities both as a person and as a researcher will always serve to me as an example of the perfect supervisor. I really appreciate his patience and scientific and human encouragements. I have learned from him a lots of things ranging from doing research to writing a scientific paper. The time and effort he put in reviewing the drafts of this thesis need also to be acknowledged.
I would like to thank my promotor Prof. Dr. P. YY. Heinker. who accepted me as a doctoral student and who had confidence in my work and dedication. I also want to express my gratitude to the review committee of the thesis for their time and for their constructive remarks.
Many thanks to all my colleagues in CWI for creating such a supportive and helpful environment. Specially to Lute Kamstra for being such a great office-mate all these years and for assisting me with all kind of practical problems, and to Paul de Zeeuw for his many useful suggestions as well as for his invaluable help in the implementation of the toolbox MATIFUS.
I am indebted to many people for cooperating and sharing scientific experiences. 1 would particularly like to thank Prof. Dr. B. Pesquet-Popescu. It has been a pleasure to work with her.
I am also indebted to STW, which financially supported my work, and all the members of the STW committee. Their fruitful discussions and suggestions have given me many helpful ideas and opened up many interesting directions for my research.
I would like to thank all my friends 1 have met here in the Netherlands, because even though I cannot write a word for everyone, I remember all of them. Special thanks to Cora, Begona, Goyita, Loles. Manon, Marlies, Maria Angeles. Maria Rosa. Miriam. Pascal and other people from Aenstal for their patience, help, constant support and encouragement. Their happiness and warm friendship have given me a lot of positive energy during all these years.
1 am mostly grateful to all my family for helping me to overcome the little and great problems, and for their love during all these years. Very special thanks to my brother Andreu for being such a great friend and wonderful person, and to my mother for her patience, strength and understanding. Gracias mama.
