ONTMOET ONS NUWE DIREKTEUR EN

ASSISTENT-DIREKTEUR

Dr. C.M. Engelbrecht

CHRISTIAAN MAURITZ ENGELBRECHT is op 4 November 1943 in die S teynsrus-distrik gebore. Hy het sy skoolopleiding aan die President Steyn Hoerskool, Bloem fontein, voltooi. Hierna het hy aan die U niversiteit van die O ranje-Vrystaat sy studies voortgesit met D ierkundeen Plantkunde as hoofvakke en in 1965 'n B.Sc. graad behaal. Gedurende 1966 voltooi hy die graad B.Sc. (Hons.) en 'n jaar later behaal hy die graad M.Sc. (Dierkunde) met onderskeiding. In 1 969 het hy 'n D.Sc.-graad in Dierkunde behaal. Sy proefskrif het oor die taksonom ie van die S uid-A frikaanse myte Galum noidea en Microzetoidea gehandel. Gedurende sy universiteitsloopbaan w as hy as tegniese assistent in die Departement Dierkunde van die U.O.V.S. werksaam.

Hy is in 1969 as dierkundige aan die Nasionale M useum , Bloem fontein, aangestel. 'n Jaar later het hy as assistent-direkteur van die M useum diens aanvaar. Hierdie pos het dr. Engelbrecht tot Oktober 1985 beklee w aarna hy mnr. J.J. Oberholzer as direkteur opgevolg het.

Dr. Engelbrecht is ook die hoof van die

Departement Akarologie van die M useum en hy gaan steeds voort om navorsing oor die taksonom ie van die Suid-Afrikaanse Oribatei te doen. Hierdie navorsingsprojek het meegebring dat 'n intensiew e veldwerkprogram onderneem is en m ateriaal alreeds by sowat 3 0 0 0 lokaliteite landw yd versamel is.

Hy is ook vir etlike jare deur die Departement Nasionale Opvoeding as m oderatoraangew ys vir d ie f o to g r a f ie k u rs u s w a t la n d w y d v ir museumpersoneel aangebied is.

Gedurende A u gustus 1984 het hy verskeie m useum s in die Verenigde State van Am erika besoek. Hierdie verkenningsbesoek het die stede W a s h in g to n , New York, C hicago, D e troit,

CARL DAVID LYNCH, born 1 June 1946, m atriculated at the A liw a l North High School and after com pleting his naval tra in in g enrolled at the University of the Orange Free State where he obtained a B.Sc. degree in Zoology & Botany in 1967. The fo llow ing year he completed a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree at the University of Pretoria, Department of Zoology: Eugene M arais Chair of W ildlife Management. .W h ile employed as a research assistant at the M am m al Research Institute he embarked on an ethological study of blesbok- under the supervision of the Director, Prof. J. Meester, w h ich led to an M.Sc. degree in 1970. The fo llo w in g year he was appointed as the fir s t He^d of the new ly establishe d

M am m alogy Division of the National Museum Bloemfontein. W orking under the supervision of Prof. J.D. Skinner, Director of the M am m al Research Institute, he was awarded a D.Sc. degree in Zoology in 1979 fo r anecological study he undertook on tw o species of sm all carnivores. Dr. Lynch has published eight fu ll length scientific articles in specialist journals, three of w h ich are monographs, to ta llin g 581 pages. In addition he has also w ritte n num erous semi- scientific and popular articles, served on a Commission of Inquiry and councils of the Zoological Society of Southern A frica and the S o u th e rn A fr ic a n W ild life M a n a g e m e n t Association, is Co-editor of tw o research jo u rn a ls and is registered as a Natural Scientist at the South A frican Council for Natural Scientists. Dr Lynch is head of the Department of M am m alogy and has recently been appointed A ssistant Director of the National Museum.

PRESTASIES VAN DIE PERSONEEL

SCHALK LOUW, entomoloog van die Nasionale Museum, Bloemfontein, het sy doktorsgraad in Entomologie aan die U niversiteit van Pretoria met lof behaal. Die verhandeling, getiteld 'Revision of the M icrocerinae (Coleoptera: C u rcu lio n id a e ) w ith an an a lysis of th e ir phylogeny and zoogeography' beslaan 370 bladsye en het behelsdiebestudering van 1 3 000 eksem plare van 29 plaaslike en oorsese wetenskaplike inrigtings.

EDW IN J. M O H A T L A N E , g u id e le c tu re r seconded to the National M useum by the Department of Education and Training has during the past three years received several academic awards. In 1983 he received a Vista University M erit A w ard for obtaining the highest marks in Education at all Vista University Campuses. (The Vista U niversity has campuses in P re to ria , V e re e 'n ig in g , B lo e m fo n te in , Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth). In 1984 he received a Campus M erit A w a rd fo ro b ta in in g the h ig h e s t m a rk s in P s y c h o lo g y on th e Bloem fontein Campus. Countryw ide he was second to a Port Elizabeth student. In 1985 he again received a Vista University M erit A w ard for obtaining the highest marks at all Vista Campuses in A frican Languages.
