*1 England’s percentage of foreign-born footballers is rather low, when compared with France, which partly derives from differences in citizenship regimes.

*2 In the case of foreign-born footballers in the national team of Germany, the Federal Republic of

Germany (West-Germany) is taken as its forerunner. Players born in East-Germany were taken as foreign-born which, partly, explain Germany’s high percentage of foreign-foreign-born footballers.

Conclusions

The World Cup has become more migratory

Nothing new

Increase in volume and diversity

From an immigration perspective

HOWEVER, the intensification of the volume and diversity of foreign-born

footballers mainly seems to be heightened reflections of trends in international

migration

Selecting foreign-born footballers seems closely related to countries’

migration histories

Citizenship regimes

National policies on immigration
