1. Important cultural values are derived not from one's country (or language group, or tribe), but from the community one is most intimately familiar with and most strongly influenced by: family, relatives and other families. [this dissertation] 2. Macro-level positions on politics and law are (co)-determined by community values. [this dissertation]
3. Individuals can hold independent values of agency and self-determination when the community of family, relatives and other families affords it [this dissertation] 4. The Dutch public campaign slogan ‘Society, that is you’ is itself an expression of societal disintegration and anomie.
5. There is at least one truly universal cultural value: that cultural values should not be questioned.
6. Collectivist values are more conservative and oriented towards tradition than individualistic values. Consequently, individuals have to adhere to more
conservative values than they would personally want to, in order to fit in. 7. Cultural evolution may very well be intertwined with biological selection, because society facilitates reproduction of specimens with desired character traits. 8. The Covid crisis has shown that ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is not only how fans express support for Liverpool Football Club, but is also a correct description of how the team performs without that support.
9. Contrary to what some honor researchers state, there are no non-honor cultures. There are however too narrow definitions of what honor is.
10. The parasite-stress hypothesis states that nations that suffer from a lack of hygiene will be more xenophobic. The resurgence of right-wing populism in hygienic countries contradicts this hypothesis.
11. Enlightenment and Humanism did not start in the 18th century with Jean-Jacques Rousseau, but in the 13th century with Haji Bektash-i Veli.
Stellingen
1. Belangrijke culturele waarden worden niet ontleend aan uit welk land
iemand komt (of uit welke taalgroep of welke stam), maar aan de gemeenschap waar men de meest intieme relatie heeft en waar men het sterkst door
beïnvloed wordt: gezin, familieleden en andere families. [dit proefschrift] 2. Standpunten over politiek en recht op het macro-niveau worden (mede) bepaald door gemeenschapswaarden. [dit proefschrift]
3. Individuen kunnen onafhankelijke waarden over agency en zelfbeschikking hebben, wanneer de gemeenschap van gezin, familieleden en andere families dat toestaan. [dit proefschrift]
4. De Nederlandse publieke campagne slogan ‘De maatschappij, dat ben jij’ is in zichzelf een uitdrukking van maatschappelijke desintegratie en anomie.
5. Er is in ieder geval één werkelijk universele culturele waarde: culturele waarden mogen niet in twijfel getrokken worden.
6. Collectivistische waarden zijn conservatiever en meer gericht op traditie dan de waarden van het individu. Ten gevolge daarvan moeten individuen zich houden aan meer conservatieve waarden dan ze eigenlijk zouden willen, om er bij te horen.
7. Culturele evolutie zou zeer wel verweven kunnen zijn met biologische selectie, omdat de samenleving de voortplanting faciliteert van specimen met wenselijke karaktertrekken.
8. De Covidcrisis heeft aangetoond dat ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ niet slechts de manier is waarop fans hun steun uiten voor Liverpool Football Club, maar een correcte beschrijving van hoe het team presteert zonder die steun.
9. In tegenstelling tot wat sommige eer-onderzoekers stellen, bestaan er geen ‘non-honor’ culturen. Er zijn daarentegen wél te nauwe definities van wat eer is. 10. De parasiet-stress hypothese stelt dat naties die lijden onder een gebrek aan hygiëne meer xenofoob zullen zijn. De heropleving van rechts-populisme in zogenoemde ontwikkelde landen, is een duidelijke contra-indicatie hiervoo. 11. De Verlichting en het humanisme startten niet in de 18de eeuw met Jean-Jacques Rousseau, maar in de 13de eeuw met Haji Bektash-i Veli.
