Svenn A.G. Meylaerts was born on August 23rd, 1968 in Turnhout, Belgium. He attended
highh school (Athenaeum-b) at the Aloysius College in The Hague, and graduated in 1987. Hereafter,, he started to study Medicine at the University of Amsterdam, where he got his doctorall degree in 1993. From September 1993 through February 1994, he worked as a researchh fellow at the department of Neurosurgery, Tufts University in Boston USA, in the fieldd of genetic brain tumor therapy. He receivedd his M.D. degree in 1996. After spending 66 months as a junior house officer at the Department of Surgery at the Academic Medical Centerr in Amsterdam (head Prof. Dr. H. Obertop), he started working as a research fellow forr over 2 years at the same department under supervision of Prof. Dr M.J.H.M. Jacobs, vascularr surgeon and Prof. Dr. C.J. Kalkman, anesthesiologist. This research resulted in the workk presented in this thesis. In January 1999 he started his surgical training for a training periodd of 6 years at the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis in Amsterdam (supervision Dr. N.J.M. Out)) and the Academic Medical Center (supervision Prof. Dr. D.J. Gouma).
