A cknowledgement

This thesis is the result of four years of work at Coronel Institute whereby I have been accompanied and supported by many people. It is with great pleasure that I now take the opportunity to express my gratitude to all of them.

First I would like to thank my direct supervisors dr. Sanja Kezic and dr. Maarten Verberk for their immense involvement and help in planning and executing all the work on time. Their encouragement and guidance helped in sorting my thoughts and changing the way of thinking in a totally new field. You always stepped in when needed. From shared experiences with other PhD students I realised that I was more then lucky to have such good supervisors and to be able to work in a relaxed atmosphere.

Dear Sanja, thank you for believing in me all the way. Without your help and support this thesis would not have been completed. You have pushed my limits to the very end. You taught me that there is always more that needs to be learned. Our talks, laughs, and time spent together outside of work gave me a sense of having a family not so far away. Hvala, najdraza teta.

Dear Maarten, thank you also for the help whenever something had to be written in Dutch, especially the Dutch version of the summary. Even when reading was such a painful task. Not talking to me in English after one year, helped to cross my boundaries and start speaking Dutch. Did I have a choice?! ("het" and "de" are still a mystery to me!)

I would like to thank my promoters professor Frank van Dijk and professor Jan D. Bos, who kept a critical eye on the progress of my work. Prof Bos, thank you for your advice and suggestions in the patient study. With no medical background, I found your help invaluable. Frank, you didn't strike me as a stereotypical department head when I first met you. But your informality, openness and interest in my work will always be remembered. I wish to thank you one more time for the critical reading of the last (final) text.

I would like to thank my colleague Cindy de Jongh. My roommate: all the laughs, talks and discussions helped in melting some of the stress we both had. You helped me a great deal in sorting out a "Nederlandse samenvatting" after so many changes. Dear Cindy, good luck with your dissertation. I am sure, knowing you as a

perfectionist, that your thesis will be a great one. But don't forget the text discreetly placed on our desk (by whom!?!) that we looked at every day (see Stelling).

I would like to thank Nadira Mohammadi, Florentine Calkoen and Carien Witthagen for the all the analyses of samples. I wouldn't have managed it all without your help. Dear Nadira, thank you for the joyful time during our working together,, especially for your involvement in the developing of the stripping technique and chromatographic method. Florentine, I realise that life with highly demanding AlOs is not the easiest task, so thanks for your patience. Dear Carien, your constant good mood helped in surviving all that "stripping" work. I wish you all the success in your new job.

Aart Monster, we really worked nicely together. We had not even a single exposure experiment fail. Your technical assistance was very valuable to me. Enjoy your retirement.

My thanks also go to Jaap Kruse for the valuable lectures and discussions on permeability and mathematical modelling. Jaap, we still have one article to go! I am looking forward to it.

I am grateful to Herman Pieters, who was always willing to help whenever my computer or the lab computer decided to think for themselves. It was so frustrating sometimes Somehow you always managed to persuade them to work properly. Thank you, dear Jelka, for editing most of the text in this thesis on a short notice. I think that the last part of my thesis was as stressful for you as it was for me.

And of course, I would like to thank all my "proefpersonen". Without full cooperation and sticking to the instructions this thesis would not have been possible.

I also want to say thank you to my mother, grandmother and aunt for their support during my pursuit of higher education. They never pressured me about school and yet they managed to instil in me the need to become a well educated person. Without them none of this would have been possible. Dear Sasa, thank you for all the support and for melting most of the stress during our 6 years apart.
