ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amin S. Hassan was born in Mombasa, Kenya, in 1980. Upon completion of his secondary education at Nairobi School, Kenya, Amin did a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Moi Univer-sity in Eldoret, Kenya, from the year 2000. He graduated from his undergraduate degree programme in 2005 and joined the Coast Provincial and General Hospital where he spent the next one year doing his clinical internship.
Amin joined the KEMRI/Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KEMRI/WTRP) in Kilifi, Kenya, in 2007 as a Research Intern.
Dur-ing this time, he spent 6 months at the Comprehensive Care and Research Clinic (CCRC) working on describing the effect of antiretroviral therapy on malnutrition in HIV-infected children. This was the tipping point for his research career.
In 2008, Amin was appointed as an Assistant Research Officer at the KEMRI/WTRP, Kilifi. While working at the CCRC, Amin established a longitudinal surveillance to determine long-term outcomes of individuals enrolling for HIV care. At the same time, he submitted a proposal for a Wellcome Trust Masters fellowship aimed at describing antiretroviral drug resistance in Kilifi, Kenya. In 2010, Amin obtained his Master of Science degree in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, UK. He spent a few months in 2011 at the Public Health England (formerly Health Protection Agency) in Colindale, London, from where he acquired skills on genotyping and interpretation of HIV drug resistance. In 2011, Amin registered for a PhD with the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. For his PhD work, Amin used the surveillance he had established to describe the characteristics and outcomes of individuals enrolled for HIV care in the CCRC, with a particular interest in HIV drug resistance. Amin continues to work at describing HIV/AIDS long-term care and treatment outcomes, including HIV drug resistance, at the KEMRI/Wellcome Trust Research programme in Kilifi, Kenya.
