Thee Syntax of Relativization
Thee complexity of the relative construction is highly interesting from aa syntactic, typological and semantic point of view. This study main-lyy addresses the syntax of relative clauses, but considerable attention iss paid to the typology of relativization, and its consequences for grammaticall theory.
Inn the first part of this book a variety of (generative) analyses is sys-tematicallyy evaluated on the basis of known and less well-knownn properties of the relative construction. The author argues in favourr of the so-called promotion theory of relativization, and pro-videss a detailed account of the syntax of the major relative clause typess around the world. Moreover, the various types of relative ele-mentss are discussed. The second part of this book examines three phenomenaa of a more general kind from the perspective of rela-tivization.. These are apposition, extraposition and possession. Thiss study is of interest to anyone concerned with the relative con-struction,, as well as a general syntactic readership.
